A clean history report is a good start, but it's not the whole story. I've looked at hundreds of cars that showed a perfectly clean Carfax, only to find obvious signs of massive repair work, frame damage, or terrible maintenance history.
1. Not every shop reports to Carfax
If a previous owner backed into a pole and paid a local body shop cash to fix it, that accident will never show up on a history report. Always check panel gaps, paint matching, and look for overspray on trim pieces.
2. Maintenance history might be missing
Just because it doesn't show regular oil changes doesn't mean they didn't happen. The owner might be an enthusiast who does their own work. Always ask for physical receipts or a maintenance log.
3. Rental and Fleet history matters
A car might have one owner on paper, but if that "owner" was a rental fleet, it's been driven hard by dozens of people. Always check the ownership type on the report.
